Sydney to Melbourne Bike Ride
Initiated by PP Ray Lipscombe, Altona City RC organized 5 Sydney to Melbourne Bike Rides to raise funds for Charity.
Highlights:
- Rotary Clubs along the way (Liverpool, Goulburn, Holbrook, Wangaratta and Seymour) generously supported us with hospitality and/or donation of funds;
- Challenges encountered included weather (rain, headwinds, freezing weather), punctures, and a knee replacement 4 months before the final ride;
- Total funds raised for charity (5 rides) were close to $89,000;
- Distribution of Funds included $18,500 each for research into Bowel, Prostate and Ovarian Cancer; $11,000 for Rotary's global program to eradicate Polio, $18,500 for local Rotary Projects, and a donation to Australian Rotary Health Research.
- Regular support team members included Joe Gianchino (Chairman), Barry Hanson , Bob Rawson, Hans Kopans, Charlie Montebello, with Assistant Governor Cherie Osborne joining the 2014 ride.
- The photo shows the final group of Riders and Support crew at the start line in Sydney;
- Alsco was the major sponsor;
