Combined Altona and Altona City Christmas Party 2024

VALE MANDY (Shalita) DAYAL

It is with deep regret we advise that club member Mandy Dayal passed away on the 16th of December last year suddenly after a cardiac arrest.   True to her devotion to community service, two days prior she had been helping at one of our sausage sizzles when she complained of tiredness.

Mandy had in total 12 years of service to rotary with six of those with Brimbank and the remainder with Altona City.  Our thought are with her children and extended family at this time. She will be missed by the club.

millenium time capsule project update

Great news.  The Time Capsules were unearthed in December 2024 and found to be in good condition.

Watch a video here about the project

We are planning to  show some exhibits at Central Square on Australia Day 2025.  Please check local media such as The STAR for updates.

Messages written by students will be returned to the relevant Hobsons Bay Schools early in the 2025 School year, so the schools can then make arrangements for returning messages to their alumni.

Our club also hopes to arrange a curated display of donated messages, or selected portions of messages, at the Hobson Bay Council's exhibition wall, later in 2025.

If you know of someone who may have placed a message in the capsule all those years ago, please forward this message on or contact us on

DISTRICT GOVERNOR MICHAEL LAPINa - OFFICIAL club VISIT

Michael Lapina the District Governor paid us an official visit at our last meeting where he outlined his vision and the International President's Stephanie Urchick's vision for Rotary going forward under our current Theme : The Magic of Rotary.

The presentation was very well accepted and informative and Michael took the opportunity to present President Lenore and the club with official recognition of our clubs commitment to The Rotary Foundation.

Our club was the Third Highest Contributor to the Rotary Foundation.  Given that there are over 60 clubs in the District, thats a mightly effort for a club that often punches well above its own weight.

Well done to all club members.

Thanks Michael and son Alex for your informative visit.

2024 Hobsons Bay Education Awards

In now its 7th year, the Hobsons Bay Education Awards were held on Tuesday the 15th of October at the Kooringal Golf Course.   In all, four schools were represented in three different categories.

There was a total of 20 nominations with the profiles of the winners read out.  It was absolutely amazing to hear the work and dedication shown by these educators who are making a difference and enhancing our children's and loved ones education.

The key note speaker was Lucienne Heyworth who spoke of her passion in providing educational opportunties for children in war torn and troubled areas of the world.

She was truly inspirational and easily held the room with her passion and inspiration.

WERN UPDATE

Saturday 5 October, saw 7 volunteers from our Club help out at the Western Emergency Relief Network at Ravenhall.

We spent the time creating crockery and cutlery packs for 4, sorting donated goods, and restacking shelves of kitchenware and other useful items.

It was a rewarding experience and enjoyable as well. I hope we can do more volunteering there in the future. The need is enormous and the volunteers hard to find.

Our Lift the Lid event was a great success and very well attended.  Rotarians, families and friends all got together wearing silly and colourful hats on the night and raffles and blind auctions helping raise money for the Australian Rotary Health Foundation.

Guest speaker Dr Lachlan Kent from Prevention United gave an informative and interesting presentation on mental health and ways we can assist ourselves and others in tackling this issue.

Prizes were awarded for the most colourful and interesting hats.  President Lenore wishes to thank all those who attended and contributed to this important fundraising event.

Members from local clubs were in attendance and an intrepid crew from Preston Rotary also joined us making the night a speical one.

Very Special Kids Golf Charity Day 2025 - Announcement

President Lenore and the membership of the club have decided overwhelmingly to not host the Charity Golf Day in 2025, and to have a break.

The golf day will be put on hold and revisted next year.  Its a good time to reflect and celebrate all the work and effort that has gone into making this event such a success over the 20 years that it has been hosted and run by the club.

The thousands of dollars raised and provided to Very Special Kids has in no small way contributed to the aims and running of such a wonderful organisation looking after terminally ill children and their loved ones.

Well done to all those who have been involved in the planning over the years.

The Charity Golf Day will be revisited next year as we now look to an alternative project for 2025.

MOCK JOB INTERVIEWS bayside college
On September 4th, the club and local rotarians and friends, conducted mock job interviews at the Bayside P12 College Paisley Campus, Newport with year 10 and 11 students.

Forty year 10 students and 20 interviewers from Altona, Altona City, Richmond, Wyndham, Williamstown, plus Altona Lions, partners of Rotarians (Greg Aplin, Ann Goodwin and Debbie Mitchell) and PP Charlie Montebello participated in the initiative.

Students took the opportunity to apply for jobs, present letters of introduction and resume's to panel members for jobs such as Personal Trainers, Food Technology and Nursing.

It was a great experience for the students to get an idea on how to prepare and present themselves when applying for a job.   It was a valuable experience all round.

Rotary youth leadership award (RYLA)

RYLA is a weeklong residential program conducted annually for 18- to 25-year-olds. RYLA encourages emerging and experienced leaders to reflect on their own skills and personal strengths to effectively contribute to their communities in a practical manner.

RYLA provides opportunities to share leadership experiences within a diverse group to understand the unique qualities, abilities and skills of others and how this diversity can empower and encourage participants to facilitate teamwork and greater understanding.

Rotary clubs are invited to nominate, sponsor or part-sponsor a young leader and provide practical support and encouragement. During the RYLA program there is a formal dinner to which all Rotarians are invited.

BUNNINGS SAUSAGE SIZZLES

Our next Sausage Sizzles are on the

9th November

14th December

We will need volunteers for these events.  Please contact Lenore on lenore.rotary@gmail.com to volunteer for a shift. If you have volunteered fora shift, please ensure you attend to your rostered shift.

WESTERN EMERGENCY RELIEF NETWORK VISITS

At our 6th of August meeting, Ross Butterworth from the Western Emergency Relief Network (WERN) spoke about the foundation and how it has helped thousands of people in the western suburbs suffering hardships with vital supplies and material aids.

FOLLOW-UP.

Our Club members and friends visited WERN on 11 September 2024 and saw the warehouse in operation.  Our club is supporting WERN in its endeavours to assist those in material need in the western suburbs.

Club President Lenore (pictured) presented 6 quilts that were provided to us by Philip Island Patchworkers to Ross Butterworth of WERN.

Rotary makes childbirth safer in remote Nepal

With a Grant from Balwyn Rotary, and the help of Rotary Clubs in Australia and Nepal, it was possible to establish a birthing centre in a health post in Kangel, a remote area of eastern Nepal.

Working with local Rotary Clubs in Nepal and three Clubs in Australia (Balwyn, Richmond and Bellarine North (9780), enabled us to purchase medical equipment in Kathmandu to kit out the new birthing centre.

It must be noted that the journey from Kathmandu to Kangel takes at least 10 hours over rough, dangerous roads on a day without any incidents.

The importance of a birthing centre in this very remote part of a very mountainous country is evident when many families have lost mothers and siblings when the mother goes into labour beside the road on her way to a distant hospital.

The importance of the opening of the centre in Kangel was acknowledged in the National newspaper in Nepal.  Since the opening, thanks to Rotary, four Kangel mothers and babies have had safe births.

PROSTATE CANCER AWARENESS
did you know?
About 1,500 drowning deaths occur each year in Thailand, one of the highest rates per capita in the world. While the Thai government is working to prevent fatalities, drowning remains the leading cause of death for those 15 and younger in the country, which has thousands of miles of coastline.

On the island of Samui, a popular tourist destination, there are no public swimming pools, says Adam Preston, immediate past president of the Rotary Club of Samui-Phangan. Club members received training from the Rotary Club of Global Water Safety and Drowning Prevention and in 2019 started Swim4Life, a series of lessons for children ages 10 to 12 at an international school’s pool.

Three Samui-Phangan club members offer basic instruction alongside 15 community members who serve as assistant teachers. Nearly 100 children had completed the course as of April. The children, from public schools, “have gone from being scared of the water to being able to swim 25 meters,” Preston says.

club meeting dates

The Rotary Club of Altona City meets on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of the month at Kooringal Golf Club, Wilga Avenue, Altona at 6.00 for 6.30 pm.

Dinner orders will now be taken on the night of the meeting at the venue.
